Is it considered a sin to be "gay"? I just want to know because I don't know what to teach my kids. With all the "gay" couples I've seen on tv lately, it seems socially acceptable, but RELIGION teaches us that it's disgusting.
God is a God of love. Homosexuals, despite their immoral behavior, are loved of God. This is so because God's love is equal for all people. As we see in the Gospels, Jesus demonstrated His love for sinners time and time again.
However, God is also a God of holiness, and the Bible is clear in its condemnation of sodomy.
Leviticus 18:22 - "Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it [is] abomination."
Leviticus 20:13 - "If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood [shall be] upon them."
Deuteronomy 23:17 - "There shall be no whore of the daughters of Israel, nor a sodomite of the sons of Israel."
Romans 1:26-27 - "For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet."
I Cor. 6:9-10 - "Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God."
I Tim. 1:9-10 - "Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;"
Jude 7 - "Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire."
In today's climate of confused morality, the reasons for the Bible's condemnation of homosexuality must be addressed. So to begin, let us ask the questions: "Is homosexuality equal to heterosexuality?" "Does homosexuality produce the same level of good or potential for good for society as does heterosexuality?" And the clear answer is "no".
Heterosexuality preserves our species. Heterosexuality produces children, and the raising of a child is the most life enhancing, life expanding experience that most people will ever have. Because heterosexuality produces children, it was absolutely essential for society to place rules into effect which govern sexuality. The rules which enforce monogamy and ban adultery serve the purpose of protecting children. Without these rules, children grow up in an insecure, rootless and even dangerous environment. Our modern society has failed to understand the reasons prior generations put so much energy into protecting marriage. Our relaxed standards of sexuality and our acceptance of easy divorce have been devastating for children (and harmful to adults as well).
The basic rules for the protection of children and society; the rules which ban sex outside of marriage, effectively ban all homosexual contact. In a stable society centered around home and family, homosexuality does not fit in. Unlike heterosexual unions, homosexual unions are sterile relationships, producing nothing for society. Individual homosexuals may make important contributions, but homosexuality itself gives nothing. Therefore, it is unwise for society to treat homosexuality as equal to heterosexuality.
Society could attempt to enforce the same rules among homosexuals as among heterosexuals. But to do so would be meaningless. For instance, to establish homosexual marriage and to put societal energy into protecting homosexual unions, would make a mockery of true marriage. True marriages provide shelter for children, and are the bedrock of the future generation. Homosexual marriages would be nothing more than a sham.
Homosexuals could adopt children, as do many heterosexual couples who are unable to have children of their own. However, children need the benefit of both the masculine and the feminine in their lives. They need mothers to protect, nourish and comfort. And they need fathers; boys needing fathers to teach them the rules of manhood and gentlemanly behavior, girls needing fathers to teach them self esteem and to guide them away from promiscuity. Two fathers or two mothers could never provide sons or daughters with what they need.
The other option is to recognize homosexuality, but to provide a strict set of rules for heterosexuals and a lax set of rules for homosexuals. But this does not work. Society at large would be dragged down to the same level as the small homosexual minority, and the stability of society would be severely damaged.
In the end, the historic ban against homosexuality as taught by the Judeo-Christian tradition is the proper course of action. It is wrong and foolish for society to celebrate homosexuality, encourage it or honor it in any way.
But not only should we refuse to honor homosexuality, it is absolutely essential for the preservation of society, that we actively oppose the homosexual agenda. Radical homosexual efforts to denigrate the traditional family, and to undermine the safety and security of children, should be fought tooth and nail. And no Christian should ever allow himself to be intimidated by accusations of "homophobia" by the politically correct left. Predatory homosexuals who are spearheading the attack against the Boy Scouts must be stopped. For they wish to do the Boy Scouts, what they did to the Roman Catholic church. Any homosexual, guilty of molesting a child, should spend the rest of his life in prison. And the efforts of homosexual extremists to open up an organization such as the Boy Scouts for their predations deserve censure by civilized society.
The rabid left will continue to accuse those who do not embrace homosexuality of being "haters." However, we must not allow their name-calling to intimidate us, or to push us into an overly angry response. We must never slip down to their level and start hating people as they do. Accusations of "hate" by the left are nothing more than acts of projection, in which the true haters falsely believe that all others are as evil as they.
Jesus provides the perfect example of condemning sin without condemning the sinner. When Jesus spoke to the woman caught in adultery, he said to her, "Neither do I condemn thee:" But then He added, "go, and sin no more." He regarded her act of adultery as a sin and refused to excuse her actions in any way. But he cared for her as a human being. And our attitude towards homosexuals and homosexuality should be the same. Homosexuals are people loved of God, but their homosexuality is wrong.
And remember, when we behave with nobility and decorum, the left will only hate us more. They want us to explode with anger so that they can point the finger of self-righteous indignation. But be strong and recall the words of Jesus, "Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets." (Luke 6:26) If you have gained the approval of the politically correct left, you are doing something wrong. When those who are evil oppose you, you are probably doing something right.

In Christ's day, the Romans made it illegal for subject peoples to own swords. But, yet, Christ commanded His followers to be prepared for their own self-defense. And it is He Who must be obeyed, not man.
